Doctors warn against weight loss drug
The Therapeutic Goods Administration has cautioned doctors against prescribing Reductil because it could be potentially fatal to patients with heart disease or hypertension.
Dr Brian Morton from the AMA says people should be careful purchasing the product online.
'We have to look at what is the proper thing to do and the medication needs supervision,' he said."
Dr Morton says there are concerns as to whether drugs bought online are safe.
"There is a concern that drugs bought over the internet will in fact not be the real McCoy," he said.
"The WHO [World Health Organisation] estimated 30 per cent of medication bought online is counterfeit, so you don't know what's in there. Is it a safe substance?"
Jennifer Stevenson from Abbott, the company that manufactures Reductil, has stressed that there are no new warnings regarding the drug.
She says Abbott and the TGA distributed information to doctors in December advising them of additional information available about the drug.
"The information that already guides the GP on what's the intended patient population, what's the appropriate use, so there's no new warnings, there's no new restrictions or anything like that," she said.
"It's simply just saying there's been an updated PI [product information], we're going to highlight again the population that should be using Reductil and the people that should not be prescribed Reductil."
Ms Stevenson says people should not attempt to buy medication over the internet.
"These treatments should be prescribed by a doctor. I think it's important that there is a prescription given by the GP. It's a prescription drug."Sunday, January 24, 2010
How to Drink More Water to Lose Weight
Most of our bodies are made of water. This said, many important functions in our body take place in water. Adequate amounts of water each day are necessary to lose weight
Stop drinking soft-drinks and replace them with water. Water has no calories, while soft-drinks that are full of sugar can sabotage your weight loss attempts. By replacing soft-drinks with water, you can save a lot of calories each day and be closer to your weight loss goals.
Limit the amount of fruit juices that you drink. While fruit juices are good for you because they offer nutrients and vitamins, many are laden with sugar and other calories. Limit the amount of fruit juice you drink to one glass a day, and drink water for the rest of the day. Only choose fruit juices that are all natural and contain no added sugar.
If you drink coffee or tea, drink these in moderation. Coffee and tea are diuretics and can dehydrate you. For every glass of coffee or tea that you drink, drink one extra glass of water.
Drink before you feel thirsty. Once you feel thirsty, your body already is dehydrated. If you drink water consistently throughout the day and never feel thirsty, then your body has a less chance of suffering from dehydration.
Only drink water with your meals. This will save you calories and you will be better able to appreciate the taste of your food. Also, this will save you a lot of money at restaurants.
